Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about how HoneyLedger handles your data and where the AI fits. If something isn't covered here, ask Honey in the app — she answers from this same page.

Where is my data stored?

In your browser, and only in your browser. Entries, drafts, aliases, and settings live in your browser's local storage on your device. HoneyLedger has no user database — we don't store your entries, your notes, or your client information on our servers. This also means clearing your browser data erases your HoneyLedger data, and your data doesn't follow you to another device.

Does anything ever leave my browser?

Only when you use an AI feature. Clicking Generate Draft sends your notes — with any names from your alias list already replaced by their stand-ins — to our server, which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude API to draft entries. Asking Honey a question sends your question and, if attached, an aliased snapshot of the selected entry. Text that isn't in your alias list is sent exactly as you typed it. We don't store any of it. Exporting a CSV or printing a report happens entirely on your device.

How does the redaction (Protect Client Names) process work?

HoneyLedger keeps an alias list — real matter and client names paired with stand-ins like "Matter A" and "Client 1." Before any AI request, every name on that list is replaced with its alias, in your browser, before the request is sent — that part always runs. But redaction only covers names you've added to the list: anything else in your notes is sent as typed, which is why the demo asks you not to enter confidential client information. You can view and edit the alias list in Review under "Show demo controls" (Protect Client Names). The mapping between real names and aliases exists only on your machine.

Is my data used to train AI models?

We don't use your data to train anything — we don't even store it. AI requests are processed by Anthropic's Claude API; under Anthropic's commercial API terms, API inputs and outputs are not used to train their models by default. And names from your alias list are replaced with aliases before those requests are sent.

Can the AI make mistakes?

Yes. AI-generated drafts, code suggestions, and Honey's answers can be wrong, incomplete, or miss context only you have. That's why everything HoneyLedger produces is a draft: nothing is approved, billed, or sent anywhere until you review it and approve it yourself.

Are the suggested times real billing determinations?

No — they're editable estimates, and the time is always the attorney's call. HoneyLedger only records time you stated in your notes, converts minutes to billable hours with the standard round-up-to-0.1 rule, and, when one stated total covers several tasks (or a workflow template is used), splits it evenly as a starting point. HoneyLedger doesn't know the complexity of your case. Your time, your call — adjust every estimate to what you actually did.

What is UTBMS?

The Uniform Task-Based Management System — a standard set of legal billing codes. Each time entry gets a code for the kind of work it was (for example, L120 for analysis/strategy), so insurers and corporate clients can read and compare bills consistently. Many insurance carriers and e-billing systems require these codes. HoneyLedger suggests a code for every draft entry; you confirm or change it. The full code list is on the UTBMS Reference page.

Does HoneyLedger give legal advice?

Never. HoneyLedger and Honey help with billing entries, billing codes, and using the product. They do not provide legal advice, strategy, or opinions about your matters, and Honey will decline if asked. Professional judgment belongs to the attorney.

What happens when I approve an entry?

Approval is your attestation that you reviewed the entry — description, date, matter/client, time, and code. Approved entries count in reports and exports. Approval doesn't send anything to a client, court, or billing system; exporting is a separate action you take yourself.

Does HoneyLedger handle expenses or invoices?

No. HoneyLedger drafts attorney time entries only. Expense codes shown with workflow templates are reference material, and invoicing stays in your firm's billing system — HoneyLedger's job ends at clean, reviewed, exportable time.

Is this version ready for confidential client information?

This is an early-access demo — please don't enter confidential client information. Use fake or aliased names while testing. The alias redaction is real and always runs, but it only replaces names you've added to your alias list, and formal security certifications and firm-level agreements belong to a production release, not a demo.
